These are some of the things that came to mind when I heard of this ‘penis shaming’ blowout on Twitter yesterday. I admit I started to pay attention quite late; I blame Palesa for bringing it to my attention ngesikhathi sakhe. If she was a period I’d be so worried.
What is Penis Shaming? Thanks to @OfentseZA for asking & tweeps who replied, we have a basic definition.
"@MothomothoBatho: Or for having an uncut penis"@Khutz100: Mocking someone for having a smallpenis "@OfentseZA: What is #PenisShaming”
I don’t know if penis shaming is now a trend or if it’s done predominantly by men or women but as a guy we do tend to have cock fights, usually in good fun amongst friends. These fights are not about shaming but take a form of one denying they are bigger than a friend and handing the endowment trophy over. “No, you are bigger.” “No, you are.” You get the picture. It seems penis shaming is not limited to small sizes but also those considered too big, I have no clue what too big is but@Phoenix902 intimates having one means a long recovery spell. “Needing half a week to recover from sex cos dude too big is NOT cute shem. #PenisShaming” One is not sure if this recovery is in a medical institution or at home. Phoenix, we’d love to hear from you about your experience.
@AnotoMe_ set the stage, tweeting from a study published in September 2012 in The Journal Of Sexual Medicine, basically the study found women, especially those who prefer vaginal intercourse, orgasm better with men with larger penises. According to the tweets the jury is still out on which orgasm, vaginal or clitoral, is the best. I wonder if this is like a ‘Chicken or beef?’ question.
It seems size truly does matter & we didn’t need a scientific study for that, #penisshaming answered it. It matters to women how small or big a penis is. Some women seem to fear large penises.
“@audreymarielle @AnatoMe_ personally I don't want a super huge penis. That's too much. Lol #PenisShaming”
“@mbongomuffin I like my cervix in tact, thank you very much. "@audreymarielle: Y'all really want 10-12 inch dick??? Why??? #PenisShaming"”
I had no idea a cervix should be damaged by a penis but it seems it has happened and there is a possible lawsuit under consideration.
@MiXO_pop: August Alsina ruptures woman's cervixhttp://i2.mediatakeout.com/249913/mto-shock-exclusive-woman-claims-that-rb-singer-august-alsina-has-such-a-giant-dong-that-he-ruptured-her-cervix-shes-suing-too.html#.U8a0AUjachU.twitter … #PenisShaming"
Others don’t know what to do with 10” penises and there was a mix of the thoughtfully serious tweets, Elite Twitter made an appearance & you couldn’t keep Feminist Twitter away even if you tried. Words like patriarchy and misogyny featured.
@TheAntiDaniel tweeted:
Notably a large number of women seemed to discuss penis shaming at great length, seeing that women are the gatekeepers of sexual intercourse and are perhaps better placed at comparing sizes, sharing their experiences should come as no surprise. However @NyakalloLephoto had a valid point “Women wanna tweet dick, I am not gonna try and stop them. But watch feminists make noise when men tweet about vaginas.#PenisShaming”
@AnotoMe_ even tweeted a few cruelly amusing pointers on how to penis shame taken fromhttp://www.pajiba.com/miscellaneous/ten-subtle-ways-to-tell-him-that-his-penis-is-too-small.php
It seems penis shaming is a thing; it does happen whether we want to blame patriarchy for it or people who don’t care about another person’s feelings or just for a laugh. When I saw this tweet from @TheAntiDaniel “Yet aside from penis shaming, the actual insecurities that men and, white men in particular, harbour are worth discussing, I feel.” I felt pity, I am not sure if that is penis shaming.
Shaming is all around in many forms, women’s bodies are shamed almost daily and men’s abdomens too, especially when girls swoon over models with rock abs.One day I’d like to see skuni (towning/sex without a condom) shaming because there is too much skuning out there, people are walking around with inexplicable discharges, itching, burning and coughs. It’s not for the humour factor but to educate & change mindsets. Safe sexual practices are far more important that worrying about penis size and foreskin.
Penis shaming will be with us for a while, personally I reckon one should love the penis they have small or big, circumcised or not, not matter how much shaming is thrown at you. Love your penis brother.
By "The Ghost", he said I must refer to him as that, I don't know why he thinks being called ghost is cool, but I appreciate the piece, it's good to hear from a male perspective as this mostly affects men, we are just on the receiving end. I don't penis shame by the way, men just get offended when I state my preference.
